Biography

Dr David Niyukuri is a Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow at the University of Burundi, and a Research Associate at the South African Centre of Excellence for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. He was trained as a mathematician at the University of Burundi, and from the joint program of the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS) and Stellenbosch University. Afterwards, he did his PhD studies in Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. His current research focuses mainly on HIV, malaria, emerging infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases. In the last couple years, he has been working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Emergencies Program, in the African Region and at Headquarters, contributing with Public Health Intelligence activities, and responding to different infectious diseases outbreaks and other public health emergencies. Since October 2021, he is the coordinator of an interdisciplinary research program at the Doctoral School of the University of Burundi. In that role, he has been leading epidemiological research in non-communicable diseases, malaria with collaborators from Notre Dame University in the US, KEMRI in Kenya, KNUST in Ghana, and National Institute of Public Health in Burundi. His research group is supporting the Burundi National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) with results from different studies, and in predicting malaria transmission dynamics for designing tailored interventions.
