A cancer research and training center at the Doctoral School of the University of Burundi

A team from the Doctoral School of the University of Burundi has been working since July 2022 on a project to establish a Research and Doctoral Training Center in Cancerology. This project is envisaged in the form of a public-private-partnership between the Doctoral School and Online Medical Concept Company (OMCC), a company headquartered in Luxembourg, and which has many cancer treatment centers in several countries around the world. The OMCC company operates in the field of cancer treatment by external radiotherapy, medical oncology, and radio-diagnostics. Since 2018, this company has already helped set up cancer treatment centers in Africa, notably in Senegal, Rwanda, Togo, Ethiopia, Botswana, Africa, and Malawi. During the courtesy call to the Rector of the University of Burundi, he reassured OMCC delegates his support throught the process of establishing a research and training center at the University of Burundi.

This company agreed to support the Doctoral School of the University of Burundi to build and equip a Research and Training Center in Cancerology with international standards. This commitment was reconfirmed during a mission that OMCC representatives carried out in Burundi on April 6 and 7, 2023. Dr Guillaume Faure (OMCC CEO) and Loïc Archivolti (OMCC COO) pay a courtesy call to the Rector of the University of Burundi and had constructive discussion with the team lead by the Director of the Doctoral School and Ambassador Liberat Mpfumukeko.

Currently, the feasibility study has already been carried out jointly by the team of experts from the Doctoral School and the company OMCC. And the University of Burundi is looking forward for such project, which will make possible to offer cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, and support services to Burundian people. It will make possible the training of human resources, particularly in radio-oncology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, clinical oncology, histopathology, radiology, cancer surgeons, laboratory, and radiology techniques, etc.
